Swamp Monster, a digital painting step by step from rough sketch to a finished painting, … Hi everyone! This is just a little digital step by step of how I painted my “Swamp Monster” picture using Corel’s Painter. I took lots of screen shots while painting the piece so you will be able to follow the painting process easily just by looking at the pictures. So I won’t write too much to each step. And here we go:

Step 1 - Sketch I usually start my sketches with just some bubbles here and there to get a first idea of how I want the piece to look like. Really no need for detail here, I just try to get things in the right position and try to get a working composition for the piece. |

Step 2 - Sketch Starting to refine the sketch, but still keep it very loose as I don’t want to spend too much time on the sketching process. This is a piece just for fun so I want to have fun and work very, very quick… |

Step 3 - Sketch Still sketching |

Step 4 - Sketch This will be enough for the sketching part. I know the sketch is pretty rough, but sometimes I just love to start coloring/painting with a pretty rough sketch ;-). |

Step 5 - Underpainting Here’s the point to get rid of the scary white paper and throw in some first color. For the underpainting I mainly use Painters digital watercolor. So I work in glazes at this point, opaque colors will follow later… |

Step 10 - Underpainting This will be enough for the underpainting, at this point I start to use opaque colors as well. For the opaque part I mainly use painters oils and oil pastels. The watercolors I still use for glazes. I just switch between glazes and opaque painting as I need it. |

Step 11 - Painting Now I just start to refine, add or change things till I think it looks right… |

Step 17 - Final Touch Ups Now as I’m almost satisfied with the painting I start the final touch ups. Add a highlight here and there and add last detail where needed…. |

Step 18 - Final Touch Ups This is the point where I would call this picture finished :-)!!! Most important, have fun while painting :-)!!!! Hope you liked this little tutorial, there will sure be more in future :-).
